Global Drone Innovation: New Propulsion and 360° Cameras

Drone technology is moving quickly outside India too.

Propulsion: On 25 September 2026, US company MagLev Aero announced dual DARPA contracts to advance its rim-driven ducted-fan propulsion. The company says its technology gives more thrust for less power, with aims of higher payload, longer range, lower noise and better efficiency. The work is funded to reach a full-scale demonstration in a relevant operating environment.

Cameras: Antigravity, a drone brand incubated by Insta360, announced the A1, presented as the first drone with built-in 8K 360-degree capture and a new approach to aerial storytelling.

Autonomy and agriculture: Industry analysts point to AI-powered autonomy, multi-sensor platforms, longer-endurance batteries and variable-rate spraying in agriculture as the most impactful advances of 2026, along with wider use of beyond-visual-line-of-sight operations as detect-and-avoid systems improve.

What it means for RPTOs and pilots: Tomorrow’s pilots will manage data, sensors and autonomy as much as sticks and gimbals. Training should keep pace.
